Technology leading U.S. manufacturer General Electric (GE) holding state power company to develop renewable energy programs Integrated Biomass Gasification in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara,
"It can turn wood chips into a 1 megawatt of electrical power to light up 1,000 homes," said President of General Electric Indonesia Setio Soemartono on Wednesday (20/3).
Setio said this project is a pilot project and has completed 50 percent since it was built years ago, and is planned for completion by mid-year. The electrical energy generated can help homes or small to medium enterprise unit in Sumba.
GE technology developed by GE Global Research Center is proven to treat synthetic gas from biomass feedstocks into electricity. Process, the technology will menggasifikasi solid biomass in trees to produce methane gas through a high temperature burning without oxygen.
Then the methane gas will be gathered to play the GE turbine engine that will generate electricity. "The wood used lamtoro gung or acacia tree that has a powerful but easy cambium grow back," he said.
