What is a mirrorless camera, the DSLR difference?

When I hear the term "interchangeable lens camera" (ILC) alias camera with a lens that can be changed, usually what comes to mind is the following DSLR camera lens lineup bulky and heavy.

But not all ILC can be classified as a Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR). In recent years, it has been circulated ILC new type size is much more compact. This camera category commonly known as mirrorless ILC (MILC) or to simply "mirrorless" only.

What's mirrorless camera? According to his nickname, which means "without a mirror", is a true mirrorless DSLR omitted part reflecting light (mirrorbox).

Without a functioning mirrorbox bend the light from the lens to the optical viewfinder, the size of the mirrorless camera could be made much shrunk compared to a DSLR, while maintaining the quality and lens to capture images that can be changed.

Between mirrorless and DSLR

Because not have mirrorbox, mirrorless camera has a number of fundamental differences with DSLR beside shape relatively smaller and simpler construction (without mechanical components for mirrorbox).

First, mirrorless not have an optical viewfinder (OVF, optical viewfinder). The process of shooting pictures or framing is done via the LCD screen or electronic viewfinder (EVF, electronic viewfinder).

How to work together with the actual EVF LCD screen, which is channeled through the image sensor is continuously active. It's just a different placement and size, which made the optical viewfinder similar to "dikeker" with one eye.

OVF EVF has advantages over, for example, the user can immediately see the results change when adjusting exposure paramenter such as aperture, ISO or white balance. Can also be added to overlay various useful information, such as the level indicator or histogram to guide exposure.

The drawback, EVF is more wasteful power because the camera should always activate the sensor and viewfinder screen so that the user can see the image.

DSLR users can see objects that are in front of the lens (Through The Lens, TTL) via OVF when the camera is not turned on. This is because the mechanism mirrorbox transmit light from the lens to the pentaprism, the viewfinder, without the sensor.
In contrast, the mirrorless EVF will appear dark by the time the camera is turned off. If the camera is on and active sensors, then the images "seen" by the lenses can be shown on mirrorless EVF.

When used aiming through the LCD, both mirrorless and DSLR (through Live View) using the same working principle, which is to continue the captured image sensor to the screen.
