Listening Mobile Technology, from 1G Up 4G

4G mobile communication technology being so hot topic given the relatively new application in Indonesia. But actually, there is not merely a technology 4G. There are a number of other technologies that preceded until he could reach that stage.

As summarized KompasTekno from various sources, wireless communication technology stems from 1G or first generation. The technology was developed into a 2G, 3G to 4G as we know it today.

1G

The first generation or 1G introduced begin 1970s. Do not imagine existing internet connection at this stage communications technology. 1G technology works utilizing analog signal transmission. At that time, this technology can only be used for phone calls only.

1G phone size was relatively large, compared with today's mobile phones. Examples phones Motorola DynaTAC are quite popular in his time. Phones made in the period 1984-1994 this has weight 794 grams. With nearly one kilogram weights, weight DynaTAC almost equivalent to the weight of the Ultrabook.

The appearance of the 1G technology also plays a major role in driving the growth of the mobile phone market. Quoted KompasTekno of Bright Hubu, current mobile phone market share grew from 30 to 50 per cent in each year. Even in 1990, 1G technology users around the world almost reached 20 million.

2G

1G technology continue to be used until replaced by 2G technology. The main difference between the two technologies is the use of radio signals. 1G using analog signals, while the 2G using a digital signal.

Phones that use 2G technology was introduced in 1990. During Phones that have implemented this technology can be used to send and receive data in a small size. That is the data here is sending a text message (SMS), picture messages and multimedia messages (MMS).

2G technology itself is primarily made for voice and data connections are likely to be slow. Updates on the network is then led to the term 2.5G and 2.75G.

The term refers 2.5G 2G communications technology combined with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). In theory, the speed of data transfer using this technology can reach 50 kbps.

Furthermore, the term 2.75G is a 2G communications technology combined with standard Enchanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE). Theoretically, the data transfer speed exceeds 2.5g, which is maximal at 1 Mbps.

3G

Standard implementation of GPRS in 2G communications technology paves the way for faster data access. Selepasnya, emerging technology known as third generation or 3G in 1998.

3G communications technology is also known as the first mobile broadband. The term arises because the ability to access the internet and can be used as a substitute for Internet connection via cable.

In addition to data transfer speed that makes internet access quite smoothly, this technology already allows the use of activities related to the transfer of audio, graphics and video. In short, the communication technology has been able to use streaming video or a video call.

The International Telecommunication Union says that 3G technology is expected to realize a minimum data transfer speed of 2 Mbps for users who are stationary or walking, and 348 kbps if it is moving at high speed. It was not clear by default how the expected maximum speed.

Slowly, 3G communications technology was developed to transition to the fourth generation or 4G. Technology in the transition period known as 3.5G and 3.75G.

3.5G technology is also known as High Speed Packet Access (HSPA). At this stage, the data transfer rate increases to a maximum of 14 Mbps download and 5.76 Mbps upload speed.

The technology is then developed into a 3.75G or HSPA +. In theory, telecommunications networks that implement this technology can get download speeds of up to 168 Mbps and upload up to 22 Mbps.

The limit is a theoretical calculation, while users in a real situation would feel the data transfer speed is lower depending on the situation.

4G

The third-generation communications technology was further developed into the fourth generation or 4G. There are two designations for 4G communication technology that is currently known. The first is the Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A).

LTE technology, theoretically offering download speeds (download) up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds (upload) up to 50 Mbps. The speed can be faster, depending on the release of the technology used by the operator. Nevertheless, LTE is still labeled pre-4G technology.

Labeling is due to the theoretical speed offered 4G LTE has not reached the standard of the International Telecommunications Union-Radio communication sector (ITU-R). The international organization issuing the International Mobile Telecommunications-Advanced (IMT-A) that contains the terms of a 4G communication technology.

The requirement states that a 4G technology must have a maximum download speed of 1 Gbps and upload a maximum of 500 Mbps.

While LTE is often referred to as 4G by mobile operators, has not reached these conditions. Based on proficiency level, the LTE-A technology was driven to emerge as True 4G technology.

4G in Indonesia

Indonesia itself is now beginning to feel the presence of 4G LTE technology, although not comprehensive and yet easy to reach. The problem is, only the first level are held at a frequency of 900 MHz.

4G LTE network, which was held by the Indonesian telecommunication operators, XL, Indosat and Telkomsel also reach is still limited in some areas. Other constraints are not many devices that can be used to access the 4G LTE in the 900 MHz frequency.

Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo) is now being prepared to announce a 4G LTE two-stage applied in the frequency of 1,800 MHz. The plan, the announcement of policies for technology that will be carried out in mid-February 2015.

"The policy that is (4G) will be implemented soon will we spend the month of February. Indonesia to move to 4G / LTE in 1,800 MHz band this year. After the policy came out, it was (continued) arrangement," said Minister of Communication Rudiantara, some time ago.

If the technology is already implemented in the frequency of 1,800 MHz, Rudiantara expect 4G LTE will be more accessible to the public. Because according to him, now there are a lot of enhancements that could be used to access the 4G LTE in the frequency.

Internet users still have to be patient to find out how muluskah speed data transfer which will be realized in Indonesia. At least, higher access speeds predicted to open up many new possibilities.
