The smart phone (smartphone) Apple iPhone is still the most popular among buyers in the United States in the last months of 2012, while the top Android around the world, Kantar Worldpanel Comtech reported.
"At the end of 2012, the image (operating system) Android is global top shows, but obviously the level of growth experienced over the past year started to slow down because of the easy wins first smart phone buyers began to decrease," said the director of global consumer Kantar, Dominic Sunnebo.
Apple's iPhone accounted for 51.2 percent of smartphone sales in the United States during the 12-week period ending December 23 of last year, according to Kantar.
The smart phone that uses the Google-backed Android software accounted for 44 percent of sales, while smart phones based on Microsoft's Windows operating system a distant third with 2.6 percent, the report showed.
Android smart phones continues to be a "best seller" in key markets including the UK, China, Spain, Australia, and Germany, while the iPhone is preferred in Japan and the United States, according to Kantar.
Windows-based smart phones have become increasingly prevalent in Europe, with a share of sales in the UK and Italy rose to 5.9 and 13.9 percent. "Windows Phone is now starting to get respectable share in a number of major European countries," said Sunnebo.
"However, its performance in China and the U.S. market remains disappointing, it remains a major challenge for Microsoft during 2013."
