Ever heard of the "Internet hall of fame"? Stage
hall of fame this one held since the year 2012 and then, to appreciate
the people who contributed to pioneering, creating, and developing
internet world.
Internet superstar names such as Tim Berners-Lee and Linus Torvalds, was displayed in the hall of fame. Everyone knows that Tim Berners-Lee is the inventor of the WWW (World Wide Web), and Linus Torvalds is the creator of the open-source Linux system.
But, have you ever heard the name Charles Herzfeld, Raymond Tomlinson, or Robert Cailliau?
Just like Tim Berners-Lee and Linus Torvalds, the three names were entered in the Internet hall of fame. Although they are less well known, but their services are no less great than the superstar internet services that we know. There are many other names listed in www.internethalloffame.org. Who are they? Following this, 8 people in between.
1. Charles Herzfeld, was a director at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in the 1960s. He is the one who made the decision to create the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the forerunner of the internet as we know it today.
2. Raymond Tomlinson, was the person who first implemented an email system in the ARPANET in 1971. He also chose the "@" in the email, to connect the user with the email domain name.
3. Robert Cailliau, is the man behind the scenes WWW. During this time, people only knew Tim Berners-Lee as the creator of the WWW. In fact, no less important role Cailliau. Besides co-authored a proposal to finance the development of WWW, WWW Cailliau also designed the logo. He also developed one of the first browser for the Mac OS.
4. J.C.R. Licklider, is important in the former DARPA. He was one of those who predicted that the network system like the internet will connect humanity with computers all over the world.
5. Donald Davis, is one of the inventors of packet switching, the basic technology in the development of the modern internet.
6. Philip Zimmermann, is the person who created PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) in 1991. PGP is an encryption method to secure digital data communication via email.
7. Mitchell Baker is Chair of the Mozilla Foundation. The former CEO of Mozilla Corporation was instrumental in the development of the Mozilla project, and the approval process for Internet applications based on open-source.
8. Brewster Kahle, develop WAIS (Wide Area Information System) in 1989. WAIS is the Internet's first publishing system, as well as the first program that can create an index large data. Kahle also founded the Internet Archive (www.archive.org), a digital library which is non-profit, in 1996. Through the Internet Archive, Internet users can access millions of web pages, books, movies and music for free.
