South Korean electronics giant Samsung announced its collaboration with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA) to develop a 4G LTE, 5G, and car connection network with other devices (Vehicle to Everything / V2X). Both of them agreed to develop the communication network in K-City, a test facility for autonomous vehicle technology in Korea, Samsung said in its official statement, quoted Tuesday (11/12).
"By building various telecommunications networks including 5G, 4G and V2X in one place, K-City will provide a real experience of autonomous driving for people and businesses throughout the industry," said Byung Yoon Kwon, KOTSA Director. "This open environment is expected to be presented as a unique innovation laboratory for industrial partners which will eventually allow to accelerate the availability of an autonomous steering era," he added.
While Executive Vice President and Head of Global Technology Services, Business Network, at Samsung, Jaeho Jeon, said the collaboration was to build a new industrial ecosystem foundation that enables autonomous vehicles to thrive. K-City consists of five real-life simulation cases, urban and rural areas, local communities, highways and parking lots, which are spread over an area of 360 square meters.
By using advanced vehicle communication technology, this test facility creates an environment for autonomous vehicles and connected cars to experience road, crossing and tunnel conditions as they really are. This will also allow testing of accident risk situations that can be recreated and repeated, contributing to improved safety for drivers and pedestrians.
