Iranian authorities have long accused Google Earth as a spy tool of the West. Along with the development of a national internet, the Iranian government is preparing a 3D digital mapping service that claimed one step better than Google Earth.
Information and Communication Technology Minister Mohammad Hassan Nami Iran this week announced that it is developing a "Google Earth Islami" officially named Basir. The product is planned to be ready to use within the next four months.
"Preparations have been made to launch the 3D map of the world, and now we create the right data centers, which can process the volume of information," said Nami sepert quoted by Mehr news agency on Tuesday (09/04/2013).
Nami gives information about what is meant by Islamic 3D map. "We are developing this service with a view of Islam that we have in Iran. Values we in Iran are the values of God, and this will be the differentiator between Basir and Google Earth," he said.
The government hopes, Basir will be a national portal that provides services on a global scale. He also claimed Basir be safely used globally.
"On the surface, Google Earth provides a service to users. Yet in reality, the security and intelligence organization is behind all of it to get information from other countries," said Nami.
Other Iranian officials support Nami statement. Iran's police chief Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam has said that Google's search engine is a spying tool. With the help of the allegedly originated from China, Iran blocked access to many search results in Google.
Since 2012, Iran has shown want to withdraw from the global internet. The government made its own e-mail service, internet blocking social networking, and many other actions to reinforce national internet.
