Some people may be familiar with the ease of life that is assisted by technology applications. For example, search for a word in a foreign language in the translation machine or search for directions with the navigation application.
Consultant at the National University Hospital (NUH) Psychological Medicine Department, Dr. Chris Tsoi said letting computers take over brain performance such as navigation and information retrieval would certainly have an effect on human mental capacity. Citing taxi driver research in London a few years ago, finding a part of the brain connected to memory grew larger after taxi drivers began memorizing different routes and navigating the city.
Dr Tsoi has seen many cases of retirees starting to get dementia. Also, he showed how digital tools and platforms were developed to have a negative impact. "They abuse human addictive characteristics when designing this application. So it is not surprising that this will monopolize brain development, "Dr Tsoi said, quoted from Channel News Asia, Saturday (8/18).
If companies don't care about how they develop their applications, said Dr. Tsoi, there will definitely be more dementia. Such observations also make these doctors worry about the demographics of a younger society.
"If young people have such comfortable lives, the most developed part of their brain is (controlling) how they use their fingertips," he explained.
