Modification of Trojan Mobile Banking Reaches the Highest Number

Trojan Mobile Banking is one of the most famous types of malware. They are designed to steal money directly from bank accounts of mobile device users. This type of attack is attractive to cyber criminals around the world, because profits can be obtained in an easy way.

This malware usually impersonates a legitimate application, thus luring people to install it. After the banking application is launched, the Trojan displays the interface itself and blocks the banking application interface. Right when the user enters credentials, malware will immediately steal user information and data.

Based on data from Karspersky Lab, the second quarter of 2018 experienced a massive surge in the number of Trojans to reach 61 thousand. This number is the highest during the history of observations conducted by Kaspersky Lab.

The biggest contribution was due to the maker of Trojan Hqwar, with about half of the latest modifications found to be related to this type of malware. Trojan Agent ranks second with around five thousand packages.

In the second quarter of 2018, the top three countries affected by any type of mobile banking malware were the United States (0.79 percent), Russia (0.7 percent), and Poland (0.7 percent). Russia and the United States swapped places compared to the first quarter of 2018. While Poland jumped from ninth to third position mainly because of the active distribution of modifications to Trojans.AndroidOS.Agent.cw and Trojan-Banker.AndroidOS.Marcher.w.

For Indonesia, Trojan-Banker. AndroidOS is detected 218 times in the period from January to July 2018. According to Kaspersky Lab experts, the high number is part of the global trend for the growth of mobile malware. The total number of malware installations also increased by more than 421 thousand compared to the previous quarter.

"The threat landscape that occurred in the second quarter of this year made us pay greater attention to the security of mobile device users," said Victor Chebyshev, a security expert at Kaspersky Lab through its official statement.

The development of malware installations, especially those related to banking, shows that cyber crime perpetrators continue to update malicious software, making it more sophisticated and skilled in penetrating security detection systems. "Both users and industry must be very careful and remain vigilant in the future because this trend will continue to grow," said Victor.

To reduce the risk of malware threats, there are a number of tips that mobile banking users can apply. Install applications only from trusted sources, ideally from the official app store. Check the permission requested by the application. If it does not match the application's tasks (eg the reader application asks to access messages and calls), this can be a sign that the application has the potential to have a threat element.

Use a strong security solution to protect you from software and dangerous actions. Don't click on any links from spam emails. Finally, do not do the rooting procedure on devices that actually provide an opportunity for cyber criminals to do unlimited actions.
