Director General of Metal Industries of the Transportation and Electronics Equipment Machine of the Ministry of Industry, Harjanto, assessed that nickel-based batteries are suitable for implementation in electric vehicles in the tropics. Indonesia is among them.
"Indeed nickel cobalt batteries are suitable for vehicles in the tropics. Given that these types of batteries tend to be more stable than lithium," Harjanto said when contacted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday (6/8).
According to Harjanto, lithium-type batteries do have greater energy storage capacity, but from the stability level they are still better nickel-based batteries. In addition, he continued, Indonesia has a source of nickel raw materials that can be developed to be processed into batteries, so that they can be produced domestically.
"We have nickel raw materials in Halmahera, now it can be developed along with the development of electric cars in Indonesia," said Harjanto.
Known, the Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto said that the development of nickel in Halmahera to produce batteries for electric vehicles could be carried out. "The plant to be built is related to the nickel base plant in Halmahera, so it will take nickel to pure nickel. Well, it will extract the cobalt for the battery as well," Airlangga said.
Nevertheless, Airlangga was reluctant to specify the investor who developed the nickel or its investment value. "Yes, it will be further informed," he said.
