The latest findings reveal artificial intelligence (AI) that can analyze the distortion of space time 10 million times faster than humans. The review is spelled out in scientific studies published in the journal Nature.
The phenomenon studied is the gravitational lens, distortion or swelling of time space which is one derivative of Einstein's theory of relativity. Many astronomers use this method to reveal more about the universe.
The Science Alert page reported, the research team came from Kavli Astrophysics and Cosmology Institute (KIPAC), Stanford, California, USA. They work with the National Accelerator Laboratium SLAC of the US Department of Energy along with the Stanford University.
"The analysis that usually takes weeks to weeks by experts can now be done by the neural network automatically in just a fraction of a second," says study author Laurence Perreault Levasseur.
He explains, the team uses artificial neural networks that are trained by exposing them with half a million simulated images of gravitational lens. The network is then shown the actual image of the gravitational lens and proved able to analyze the distortion of less than half a second.
Meanwhile, study leader Yashar Hezaveh conveyed, the gravitational lens occurs when the light from the observed source appears distorted due to the distribution of matter between the source and Earth. This phenomenon gives clues as to how mass can be distributed in space, which also changes over time.
"The neural networks we tested, three of which have been available and one we developed ourselves, can determine the properties of each lens, including how its mass is distributed and how much it enlarges the background image of the galaxy," Hezaveh said.
