Huawei Announces Latest Chip with AI Technology

Huawei expanded its artificial intelligence technology (AI) by launching the latest AI chip, Ascend 910 and Ascend 310. This was conveyed directly by Huawei Chairman Eric Xu in the title of Huawei Connect 2018 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.

Reporting from the Korea Times page, Wednesday (10/10/2018) Xu said that the Ascend 910 chip is able to help data centers to process more data in a faster amount of time than other AI chips.

In addition, the Ascend 3100 which will be used as an IoT device (Internet of Things) has efficiency for low power consumption.

He also added the two chips will be available on the market in the second quarter of next year. Previously, in September 2018 Huawei had introduced Huawei Cloud EI's AI enterprise service platform and the open AI mobile platform Huawei HiAI in April.

Along with the presence of the Ascend chip, Xu said Huawei would be able to provide a full AI business portfolio.

"The full stack is about our technology functionality. Our complete portfolio includes chips, chip activation, training and inference frameworks, and application empowerment," Xu said.

With the new AI chip, Huawei hopes to compete in the AI chipset sector with world-renowned technology companies including Samsung Electronics, Qualcomm and Nvidia.

By entering the AI chipset market, Huawei, which currently has a network, cloud and consumer device business, says it aims to create ecosystems around the AI application.

The AI chipset market can be divided into several categories such as central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), neural network processors (NNPs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC). It has been dominated by US companies including Nvidia, Intel, IBM and AMD.
