Intel Announces 5G Modem

Intel announced the XMM 8160 5G modem. This modem is a multimode optimized to provide 5G connectivity to mobile phones, PCs and broadband access gateways.

Intel accelerated the launch of the modem half a year earlier. The modem will support top speeds of up to 6 gigabits per second, which are claimed to be three to six times faster than the latest LTE modems currently available.

This modem will be available in the second half of 2019 and will provide features and experience to accelerate widespread 5G adoption. "The new Intel XMM 8160 5G modem provides the ideal solution to support large volumes for scaling in several device categories to coincide with a wide spread of 5G," said Cormac Conroy, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the Communication and Devices Group. received in Jakarta, Tuesday (11/13).

Intel saw a huge demand for the advanced feature series of XMM 8160. "So we made a strategic decision to pull this modem launch half a year to provide a leading 5G solution," he continued.

Intel XMM 8160 is a multimode modem, which means it will support new standards for 5G New Radio (NR), including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA), as well as old 4G, 3G and 2G radios on a single chipset. With a single chip multimode baseband capability, the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem will allow device manufacturers to design smaller and more power-efficient devices.

The integrated Intel multimode solution supporting simultaneous connectivity (EN-DC) for LTE and 5G is also considered important because 5G cellular network devices must be compatible with 4G if 5G is not available at any time or at any location. This modem offers the technology needed to support the new millimeter wave spectrum (mmWave) and support for sub 6 GHz 5G NR (including FDD and TDD bands from 600 MHz to 6 GHz) and download speeds of up to 6 Gbps.

The Intel XMM 8160 5G modem is planned to launch in the second half of 2019. Commercial devices that use Intel XMM 8160 5G t modem phones, PCs and broadband access gateways are expected to be available in the first half of 2020.
